We’re only a few months away from enjoying seasonal varieties of organic fruits and veggies our local farmers have to offer. Many of us who tend to be obsessed with health often overlook the fact that not every food needs to be organic.
Avoiding all insecticides, rodenticides, herbicides, fungicides, antimicrobials and genetically modified foods is almost an impossible task these days. We can only hope that our local organic farmers are not using any of the above in violation of their organic standards.
Thankfully, out of the dozens of fruits and vegetables tested, the following ten foods do not have to be organic. These had some of the lowest pesticide loads, and consequently are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume from the standpoint of pesticide contamination.
6) Sweet peas (frozen)
10) Onions (although buyer beware as some onions are now irradiated)
Kiwi’s and watermelons were originally on this list, but due to the recent consumer alert it may be best to avoid them altogether.
