Gillard staff planned for coup

Julia Gillard insists she decided to challenge Kevin Rudd only on the day she confronted him, after fresh allegations last night that her staff began preparing her acceptance speech two weeks before she rolled Mr Rudd for the leadership.

In claims that threaten to increase the tension between Ms Gillard and Mr Rudd, the ABC program Four Corners reported that two weeks before June 24, 2010, when Mr Rudd was ousted, her office was preparing a speech for her to deliver when she took over.

Ms Gillard said she did not ask for any speech to be written but several times avoided answering when pressed whether she knew about it.
